Stearns County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was established on February 20, 1855, and named in honor of Charles Thomas Stearns, an influential member of the Minnesota Territory, and a prominent businessman involved in railroads and steamboats. Stearns County, part of the larger Central Minnesota region, is composed of over 30 cities and townships with St. Cloud serving as its county seat.

Being settled around 1851, Stearns County saw an influx of German and Polish immigrants throughout the latter part of the 19th century. These settlers were initially attracted to the area due to the abundance of fertile farmland; many coming from agriculture-based communities in their native countries. Today, the county still enjoys a rich agricultural industry and ranks high in dairy production and crop farming in the state.

Historically, Stearns County made significant contributions during World War II by manufacturing arms and military equipment including armored vehicles and ammunition. Granite quarrying was another major industry in the county thanks to its vast granite resources, earning St. Cloud its nickname "The Granite City."

One fun fact about Stearns County is that it houses the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve, which offers over 680 acres of land for public use. Within its grounds, visitors can explore over 20 abandoned granite quarries that have been converted into beautiful swimming areas, hiking trails, and sites perfect for rock climbing. The park showcases the county's storied connection to the granite industry and provides a unique recreational experience for residents and visitors alike.
