Steele County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was established on February 20, 1855. It was named in honor of Franklin Steele, a prominent early settler, who played a significant role in developing the city of Minneapolis. The county covers a total area of 432 square miles and lies within the Southeastern part of Minnesota. Its county seat and largest city is Owatonna, which was founded in 1854.

In the early years, the region was predominantly populated by Native American tribes, particularly the Dakota people. The area later became an agricultural hub with fertile lands, attracting many Europeans to settle in various townships like Clinton Falls, Merton, and Havana in the late 19th century. Railroads further contributed to the development and growth of this county, with the rapid expansion of many industries.

A fun fact about Steele County is the presence of the National Farmers' Bank (now Wells Fargo), which was designed by architect Louis Sullivan. It is one of his "jewel-box" bank designs and is now considered a local landmark in the city of Owatonna.
