Stevens County is located in the great state of Minnesota and was officially established on February 20, 1862. It was named in honor of Isaac Ingalls Stevens, who was a territorial Governor of Washington and a delegate to the US Congress. The county is part of the Western Minnesota Prairie Oasis with an area of approximately 575 square miles.

The area that became Stevens County was originally inhabited by the Dakota Sioux and later the Ojibwe Native American tribes. In the mid-1800s, European immigrants, primarily from Scandinavia and Germany, began to settle in the area. Agriculture played an essential role in the county's development, with its fertile soil attracting farmers who primarily focused on growing crops like wheat, corn, oats, and barley, as well as raising livestock.

Morris, the county seat, was founded in 1871 when the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad extended a line from St. Cloud to Herman. The town was named after Charles A. Morris, the chief engineer of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The county courthouse, designed by architect M.E. Beebe, was built in 1906 and is an example of neoclassical architecture.

A fun fact about Stevens County is that it's home to the University of Minnesota Morris, one of five campuses in the University of Minnesota system. The campus was originally established in 1887 as an American Indian residential school before being turned into a public college in 1960. Today, the University of Minnesota Morris is known for its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, with several green initiatives and LEED-certified buildings on campus, which makes it an attractive destination for eco-conscious students.
