Traverse County is situated in the great state of Minnesota and was established on February 20, 1862. Named after Lake Traverse, it is located in the western part of the state along the eastern boundary of South Dakota. It shares its name with the county's largest body of water, which marks the start of the Minnesota River. Traverse County is part of the larger West Central Minnesota region.

The county has an area of 586 square miles and, as of the 2020 census, had a population of approximately 3,310 people. Wheaton, the county seat, has been the administrative center since 1884. Predominantly an agricultural region, Traverse County's economy revolves around farming and other agriculture-related activities such as livestock.

One fun fact about Traverse County is that it is home to the annual Wheaton Dumont Co-op Speedway, a 3/8-mile dirt oval racing track which hosts exciting motor races for enthusiasts from late April to early September.
