Wabasha County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Minnesota, was established on October 27, 1849, making it one of the original nine counties in the state. It spans approximately 550 square miles and is bordered by the Mississippi River to the east. The county was named in honor of Chief Wapasha III, who was a prominent leader of the Mdewakanton Dakota Native American tribe.

Wabasha County's rich history includes Native American tribes, as well as settlers who arrived in the region primarily during the 1850s. In the 19th century, the county experienced an influx of German and Irish immigrants who contributed significantly to its cultural, agricultural, and economic development. The Mississippian culture that once thrived in the area left several burial mounds as evidence of their existence, with some of them dating back over 1,000 years.

One fun fact about Wabasha County is that it is home to the National Eagle Center, an educational facility situated in the city of Wabasha. This center focuses on the conservation, research, and educational outreach related to eagles, especially the American bald eagle. Wabasha County's location along the Mississippi River provides a primary habitat for these impressive birds, making the region a popular destination for eagle watchers and bird enthusiasts.
