Watonwan County is located in the southern part of the great state of Minnesota. It was established on February 25, 1860, and named after the Watonwan River, which runs through the county. The river's name was derived from the Dakota Sioux word "wata", meaning fish, and "wai", meaning river, literally translating to Fish River.

The county seat is St. James, which was founded in 1870 and named after a prominent settler and business entrepreneur, St. James Armstrong. The county is primarily an agricultural region, with its fertile lands supporting a variety of crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat.

As for a fun fact about Watonwan County, the world's largest pelican statue is located in the county. Standing at 15 feet tall and 30 feet wide, the statue is affectionately known as "Pinky the Pelican" and can be found in Madelia, a city within Watonwan County. Madelia is famous for its birdwatching opportunities and this statue serves as a tribute to the bird life found in the region.
