Wilkin County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was founded on March 8, 1858, the same day Minnesota became a state. It was originally named Toombs County, however, the name was changed to Wilkin County on July 2, 1863, in honor of Alexander Wilkin, the first Secretary of State of Minnesota, who was later killed in the Civil War. The county seat is Breckenridge, and it is situated along the border of Minnesota and North Dakota.

The history of Wilkin County is closely related to the Ojibwe and Dakota (Sioux) tribes as they were the original inhabitants of this land. They were eventually displaced by European settlers during the expansion of settlements in the 19th century. The Red River Valley attracted settlers due to its fertile soil and abundant resources. The region supported the growth of agriculture, particularly wheat farming, and the development of railways and other transportation systems.

A fun fact about Wilkin County is that it houses two significant rivers: the Otter Tail River and the Bois de Sioux River. These two rivers meet within the county to form the Red River, which is a North American historic and essential waterway. The Red River flows north along the border between Minnesota and North Dakota and serves as a vital trading and transportation route.
