Winona County is located in the southeastern corner of the great state of Minnesota. It was first established on February 23, 1854, and named after a legendary Dakota woman known as Princess We-Noh-Nah. This area was originally inhabited by the Dakota Sioux Native Americans, who later had to cede their lands to the United States government through various treaties.

During the 19th century, the city of Winona, which is also the county seat, became an important hub for transportation and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the Mississippi River. It attracted immigrants, mainly from Germany and Poland, who contributed to the thriving lumber and milling industries. As the lumber industry declined, Winona County gradually transformed into a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, education, retail, and technology.
