The Official Minnesota State Insect
Minnesota State Bug
Monarch

The Monarch butterfly, Minnesota's state insect, is one of the most iconic and well-known species of butterflies in the world. It is easily recognizable because of its bright orange and black patterned wings. Monarchs are migratory creatures that make an annual migration of thousands of miles from Mexico and the southern United States to Canada in the summer and back again in the fall. Interestingly, Minnesota is a critical part of the Monarch's migration, as it is one of the few places in the world where the butterflies can lay eggs and survive the winter.

The Monarch was designated as the Minnesota state bug by the Minnesota Legislature in 2000. This designation was the result of a student-led campaign that began in the mid-1990s when students at the University of Minnesota began to notice the dramatic decline in Monarch populations. The students' efforts to bring attention to the Monarch's situation, combined with the efforts of many conservation and environmental groups, resulted in the Monarch becoming the Minnesota state bug. The Monarch is beloved by many Minnesotans and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting pollinator species and their habitats.
