Atchison County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially organized on February 14, 1845. It was named in honor of David Rice Atchison, a prominent U.S. Senator from Missouri who also served as President pro tempore of the Senate from 1846-1855. The county encompasses an area of approximately 550 square miles and has its county seat in the city of Rock Port.

The region was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Iowa and Sac & Fox, before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. The first recorded white settlement in the area was made in 1837 by Squatter Sovereigns who established villages along the Nishnabotna, which is now the eastern boundary of the county.

Atchison County played a role in the westward expansion of the United States, as the Missouri River bordering the county's western edge served as an important passage for steamboats traveling from St. Louis to Council Bluffs. The California, Mormon, and Oregon Trails also crossed through the region. The development of the railroad in the mid-19th century further spurred growth and settlement in the area.

Agriculture has been a significant economic force in Atchison County since its establishment, with fertile soil contributing to abundant crop yields. Today, the county's agricultural production is focused mainly on corn, soybeans, and livestock.

One fun fact about Atchison County is that it has the distinction of being Missouri's smallest county by population, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, with a population of just over 5,600 residents.
