Audrain County, located in the great state of Missouri, was formally established on December 17, 1836. Named in honor of Colonel James Hunter Audrain, a war veteran and prominent local figure, the county was carved out from the union of Ralls and Callaway Counties. Mexico, the county seat, was founded in 1836 and officially incorporated in 1855. Audrain County is part of the Centralia Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The county has a rich agricultural heritage, mainly focusing on crop and livestock farming. In the mid-19th century, it became a leading producer of corn, wheat, and hay. The development of the railroad system in the late 1800s helped boost the agricultural economy even more. Over the years, Audrain County has been home to several cultural events, including the annual Soybean Festival and the Walk Back in Time historic event at the Audrain Historical Society.

A fun fact about Audrain County is that it is known as the "Firebrick Capital of the World." At its peak, Mexico, the county seat, was home to five firebrick factories, which produced fire-resistant bricks used in various industries. The AP Green Fire Brick Company, founded in 1910, was one of the major contributors to the economy of the area and remained in operation until the early 21st century.
