Buchanan County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on December 31, 1838. The county was named in honor of James Buchanan, who would later become the 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). Prior to its establishment, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Ioway, Otoe, and Missouria. The land was ceded to the U.S. government by these tribes following treaties signed in 1836 and 1837.

In the early 19th century, European settlers, mainly French and American, began to establish settlements and trading posts in the area. One such trading post was founded by Joseph Robidoux, an influential fur trader, who established the Blacksnake Hills Trading Post in 1826. This trading post would eventually give rise to the city of St. Joseph, the seat of the county, which thrived due to its strategic location along the Missouri River.

Buchanan County experienced significant growth during the California Gold Rush in the late 1840s, as many pioneers passed through the region on their way west. St. Joseph became a key outfitting and jumping-off point for westward-bound settlers, due to its status as the western terminus of the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. The county continued to prosper during the following decades, with its economy centered on agriculture, trade, and manufacturing.

One fun fact about Buchanan County is that it played a significant role in the Pony Express, the famous mail service, which began in 1860. St. Joseph, Missouri, served as the eastern terminus and starting point for the Pony Express. Riders would pick up mail from St. Joseph and carry it hundreds of miles westward to Sacramento, California. Though the Pony Express only operated for roughly 18 months, it has become a symbol of American frontier spirit, and Buchanan County remains proud of its role in this exciting chapter of American history.
