Butler County is situated in the southeastern part of the great state of Missouri, USA. Established on February 27, 1849, the county was named in honor of William O. Butler, a distinguished political figure and military officer who fought in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War.

The county seat, Poplar Bluff, was established shortly after the formation of the county. Throughout its history, Butler County's economy has been largely centered around agriculture, with crops like cotton, corn, and soybeans dominating the landscape.

During the Civil War, Butler County was the site of numerous skirmishes and battles, given its strategic location near the Arkansas border. The presence of both Union and Confederate forces created a volatile environment, with various militias and guerilla groups wreaking havoc in the area.

One interesting fact about this region is the historical presence of Native American tribes, especially the Osage and Cherokee people. Additionally, Butler County is home to several parks and conservation areas, including Lake Wappapello State Park, Mark Twain National Forest, and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, showcasing the county's rich natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
