Cass County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on March 3, 1835. The county was originally named Van Buren County in honor of then Vice President Martin Van Buren, but it was later renamed to Cass County in 1849 to honor Lewis Cass, a Michigan senator and an advocator for the doctrine of popular sovereignty. The county is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and has a rich history closely tied to westward expansion and the Civil War.

Cass County experienced significant growth due to westward expansion in the early 19th century, as settlers passed through or decided to make their home in the region. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Cass County, like the rest of Missouri, became a center of tension because of its status as a border state, where both pro-slavery and anti-slavery residents maintained a delicate balance.

During the Civil War, Cass County witnessed its share of conflict, including the Battle of Harrisonville, which took place on September 17, 1861, and other smaller skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces. The county continued to grow after the Civil War, with the expansion of railroads in the late 1800s and early 1900s contributing significantly to its economic development.

Today, Cass County serves as a hub for various industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and retail. The county is characterized by its unique blend of rural and suburban landscapes and has become a desirable location for those seeking a high quality of life within easy commuting distance of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.

Fun Fact: Cass County is home to the Big Creek Antique Power Association, which hosts the annual "Big Creek Antique Power Show" in Peculiar, Missouri. This event showcases antique tractors, steam and gas engines, and farming equipment and attracts visitors from all around the Midwest.
