Douglas County is situated in the southern-central portion of Missouri and is part of the Springfield-Branson Metropolitan Area. Established in 1857, it was named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas, a prominent American politician who supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The county covers an area of approximately 815 square miles and has a population of about 13,000.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Osage and the Kickapoo before European settlers arrived. Primarily a rural area, the county has a long history of agriculture and timber production. The county seat, Ava, was established in 1871, and it witnessed the growth of small-scale industries and businesses.

During the Civil War, the Douglas County area experienced some skirmishes, as Missouri was a battleground state with a divided population. The Battle of Clark's Mill took place within the county in 1862, a confrontation between Union and Confederate forces that ended in a Confederate retreat.

One fun fact about Douglas County is that it is home to the Rippee State Wildlife Management Area, a natural preserve that spans over 400 acres. The area is surrounded by picturesque landscapes and offers several outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, hunting, and hiking. In addition to a healthy population of fish and game species, the wildlife management area offers opportunities to spot various bird species and the chance to explore diverse plant life.
