Dunklin County, located in the southeastern part of Missouri, was officially established on February 14, 1845. It was named after Daniel Dunklin, a former governor of Missouri, who was known as the "Father of Public Education" in the state. The county seat is Kennett, which is surrounded by fertile agricultural lands mainly producing cotton and rice.

The region's history dates back thousands of years with Native American settlements, but European descendants soon began exploring the area in the 18th century. Spanish land grants encouraged the first settlers in what would become Dunklin County during the late 1700s and early 1800s. Agriculture played a significant role in the settlement of Dunklin County in the 19th century. The area saw an influx of settlers after the War of 1812 due to the availability of fertile farmland.

The 20th century saw significant growth for Dunklin County due to the railroad industry's expansion, which led to the establishment of several communities and increased trade and transportation. In 1900, a substantial earthquake shook the region and exposed a previously unknown aquifer, known as the Reelfoot Rift, which is an important source for irrigation in the agricultural industry today.

A fun fact about this region is that it is known as the "Bootheel" of Missouri due to its distinctive shape that protrudes from the southeastern part of the state, like the heel of a boot. This area is the only part of Missouri that lies entirely in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, making it an essential region for agriculture within the state.
