Holt County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Missouri. Established on January 29, 1841, the county was named in honor of David Rice Holt, a Missouri state legislator. The county seat is situated in the city of Oregon.

Holt County's early history is marked by the presence of Native American tribes, including the Iowa, Otoe, and Missouri tribes, before European settlers ventured into the region. In the early 19th century, the area witnessed an influx of settlers, mainly from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, who were attracted by its fertile soil and access to the Missouri River.

During the 1850s, the county gained prominence due to the presence of the infamous outlaw, Jesse James. In the decades that followed, agriculture played a significant role in Holt County's growth, with corn, wheat, and oats as primary crops cultivated in the region.

A unique fact about Holt County is its location within the "loess hills" region, which are wind-deposited hills of silt that can reach heights of up to 200 feet. These loess hills create a visually stunning landscape and are of considerable geological interest.

Today, Holt County is known for its agricultural contributions, its vibrant communities, and its rich historical past that provides a fascinating insight into the early days of the Missouri region.
