Jefferson County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Missouri and has a rich history dating back to its establishment on December 8, 1818. Named in honor of former President Thomas Jefferson, the county has played an important role in the state's development. The county seat, Hillsboro, was founded in 1839 and was initially called Monticello before the name was changed to reflect its location on a hill.

In the early days, the region was primarily inhabited by Native Americans, particularly the Osage and Mississippian tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1700s, mainly of French and German descent. The county quickly gained a reputation for its abundance of natural resources, particularly lead, which attracted miners and contributed to the area's growth.

The county is strategically located, as it is bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and the Meramec River to the west. These waterways aided in the transportation of goods and supported the thriving agricultural and mining industries. The rivers also contributed to the development of the county's recreational areas, with several parks and attractions emerging over time.

During the American Civil War, Jefferson County was a strategic location due to its proximity to the rivers and the Iron Mountain Railroad. Although Missouri was a slave state, the county was divided between those who supported the Union and those who favored the Confederacy. This led to occasional skirmishes and tension in the region.

Fun Fact: One interesting aspect of Jefferson County is its role in the origins of the beloved fictional character, Tom Sawyer. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, lived and worked in the county for a brief period in the 1850s. While living in the area, Twain found inspiration for his novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in the local charm and beauty of Jefferson County.
