Laclede County is located in the south-central region of the great state of Missouri. Established on February 24, 1849, it was named in honor of Pierre Laclde Liguest, a French explorer and fur trader who is best known for co-founding the city of St. Louis, Missouri, in 1764. The county's seat is Lebanon, which was established in 1849 and named after Lebanon, Tennessee, the previous home of many of its early settlers.

A brief historical background of Laclede County involves its early settlement by French, German, and Irish immigrants who were attracted to the region for its rich farmlands and seemingly-endless timber supply. The railroad's arrival in the 1860s spurred growth and development, with the Frisco Railroad line connecting Lebanon to Springfield and St. Louis. This rail connection promoted the export of agricultural goods and increased commerce in the area.

During World War II, the construction of Fort Leonard Wood resulted in an influx of military personnel into Laclede County, further contributing to the area's growth. The county's economy has been traditionally centered around agriculture, timber, and industry, with a more recent shift towards service-based employment and tourist-attractions.

A fun fact about Laclede County is that it is home to Bennett Spring State Park, which is one of Missouri's most popular state parks. It features the third-largest spring in Missouri, attracting thousands of visitors every year for trout fishing, camping, and outdoor recreation.
