Lafayette County is located in the western part of Missouri, United States. Established on November 16, 1820, the county was originally named Lillard County in honor of James Lillard, a Tennessee politician. However, in 1825, the name was changed to Lafayette County to pay tribute to the French General Marquis de Lafayette, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War.

An interesting aspect of Lafayette County's history is its potential ties to the infamous Jesse James, who was a prominent outlaw during the latter half of the 19th century. It is believed that his gang may have been involved in a robbery at the Alexander Mitchell Bank in Richmond, Missouri, on May 23rd, 1867. Jesse James and his brother Frank, who were part of the James-Younger Gang, were notorious outlaws known for their robberies, murders, and general defiance of law.
