Maries County is located in the Central region of the great state of Missouri. Established on March 2, 1855, it was named in honor of the Maries River and Little Maries River, with "Maries" deriving from the French word "marais," meaning marsh, lake, or pond. The county seat is Vienna, which was founded in 1856.

The Osage tribe was one of the first known native groups to inhabit the region before European settlers arrived. By the early 19th century, French fur trappers and traders frequented the area, and later, American pioneers moved westward to settle in Maries County. The county was predominantly agricultural in its early years, with mixed subsistence farming and livestock production.

The Civil War era saw conflicts and skirmishes in and around the county, with both Union and Confederate forces traversing the region. Post-Civil War, the county continued to experience growth, both economically and demographically. In the late 19th century, the expansion of the railroad infrastructure further boosted the county's development.

In the 20th century, Maries County continued to rely on agriculture and livestock to fuel its economy; however, it also began to diversify by tapping into industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education.

Fun fact: Maries County's natural beauty is showcased by its scenic landscapes and many springs. Boiling Spring, located in Maries County, is Missouri's 39th largest spring and emanates from the base of a low bluff, with an average daily flow of over 12 million gallons of water.
