Marion County, located in the great state of Missouri, has a rich historical background. Established on December 23, 1826, it is named after General Francis Marion, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War known as the "Swamp Fox." The county's seat is Palmyra, and it is home to the city of Hannibal, which is renowned for being the birthplace of the famous American author Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain.

Marion County was primarily settled by migrants from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Their initial settlement was along the Mississippi River which provided fertile land for agriculture and facilitated transportation. In its early years, Marion County's economy was driven largely by agriculture and the export of timber and other natural resources.

One significant historical event that took place in Marion County was the infamous Palmyra Massacre. During the American Civil War on October 17, 1862, ten Confederate prisoners were killed in reprisal for the abduction of a Union supporter. This incident left a lasting impact on the county's history.

A fun fact about Marion County is its connection to Mark Twain. Many of his famous novels, such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," were inspired by the people, places, and experiences of his childhood in Hannibal along the banks of the Mississippi River. Today, visitors can explore the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal and gain insight into the formative years of this iconic American author.
