Monroe County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Missouri. It was officially established on January 6, 1831, and was named in honor of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe, who served from 1817 to 1825.

The county's early history saw its lands inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Osage, Fox, Sauk, Missouri, and Potawatomi, before European settlers began to arrive, mainly from the southeastern United States. The settlers were attracted by the fertile lands and the potential for agricultural growth.

During the American Civil War, Monroe County witnessed some localized guerrilla warfare; however, the county experienced no major battles. The post-war period saw a growth in agriculture, as well as the expansion of the railroad, which aided in the development of the county and its economy.

The county seat of Monroe County is Paris, which was founded in 1831 and named after the city of Paris, France, by one of the early settlers. Today, Monroe County remains predominantly agricultural, with a strong focus on crop farming and livestock production.

Fun Fact: Monroe County is home to Mark Twain Lake, a large reservoir named after the famous American author Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain. The lake, established in 1983, offers recreational activities like fishing, camping, and boating, attracting numerous visitors every year to this beautiful region of Missouri.
