New Madrid County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of Missouri. It was founded on October 1, 1812, which makes it one of the earliest counties established in Missouri, just one year after it gained statehood. The county is named after the city of Madrid in Spain, which was the capital of the Spanish Empire at the time.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Mississippian and the Osage. In 1541, explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to encounter the area. However, it wasn't until 1787 that Spanish authorities began to establish settlements in the region. The first European settlement, New Madrid, was founded by George Morgan, an American Revolutionary war veteran, and land speculator.

New Madrid County has a significant history related to Native American tribes, European explorers, and the growth of the United States. During the Civil War, the county was a site of several skirmishes and battles due to its strategic location near the Mississippi River.

A fun fact about New Madrid County is that it was the epicenter of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes, which were some of the largest earthquakes in the United States' history. The quakes were so powerful that they reportedly rang church bells in Boston, Massachusetts, over 1,000 miles away, and temporarily reversed the flow of the Mississippi River. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, which lies within the county, continues to be a source of concern for seismologists due to the potential for future earthquakes.
