Osage County is located in the central region of the state of Missouri, USA, and spans an area of about 610 square miles. Established on January 29, 1841, it was named after the Osage River, which in turn was named after the Native American tribe, the Osage Nation.

The early history of Osage County is centered around the Osage Nation, whose members dominated much of present-day Missouri before Europeans arrived in the 17th century. Throughout the 18th century, French and Spanish fur traders settled in the area, while the Osage people gradually lost their native lands due to encroaching European-American settlements.

One notable historic site in Osage County is the Osage County Courthouse in Linn, built in 1914. The courthouse has Romanesque Revival style detailing and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Agriculture, farming, and trade grew as main sources of income for the residents, and the county remains predominantly rural today. Some important industries in the county include livestock raising, poultry and egg production, and crop farming, with corn, soybeans, and wheat as the major cash crops.

A fun fact about Osage County: The county is home to several "painted rock" sites that showcase prehistoric petroglyphs created by Native Americans. One of the most famous of these is Painted Rock Conservation Area, which comprises over 1000 acres and features pictographs and petroglyphs dating back over 1000 years. Visitors can hike through this beautiful landscape and marvel at the fascinating art left behind by the county's original inhabitants.
