Ozark County, located in the southern central part of Missouri, was established on January 29, 1841. It was originally named as "Decatur County" in honor of Naval hero Stephen Decatur. Later, in 1845, the name was changed to Ozark County, drawing inspiration from the Ozark Mountains that traverse the region. The county seat, Gainesville, was chosen in 1851 and named after war hero General Edmund P. Gaines.

Ozark County houses a population of around 10,000 people, spreading across an area of approximately 755 square miles. Primarily rural, the area is known for its picturesque landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities such as fishing, camping, and boating.

A significant part of the county's history lies in its economic development. Early settlers relied on subsistence farming, hunting, and timber harvesting. As the region grew, small industries like grist mills, sawmills, and blacksmith shops emerged. Over time, the construction of a series of hydroelectric dams in the early 20th century led to the transformation of the White River into a chain of lakes, fostering tourism and recreational developments in the county.

A fun fact about Ozark County is that it is home to the Caney Mountain Conservation Area a 7,899-acre public park offering hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, and one of the largest populations of eastern collared lizards in Missouri. This unique reptile, with its vibrant coloration and distinct collar markings, adds a touch of natural wonder to this beautiful region of the United States.
