Pemiscot County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Missouri. Established in 1851, the county was named after the Native American term "Pemiscot," which means "liquid mud" in reference to the area's swampy terrain. The county seat is Caruthersville, and it is part of the Missouri Bootheel, a distinctive geographical extension of the state that emerges into Arkansas.

In its early days, Pemiscot County was inhabited primarily by European settlers, who were attracted to the area for its fertile soil and easy navigation along the Mississippi River. Agriculture played a crucial role in the county's economy with the cultivation of cotton, soybeans, and corn. The construction of railroads in the 19th and early 20th centuries contributed significantly to the area's growth and prosperity.

One fun fact about Pemiscot County is that it is home to Reelfoot Lake, which was created by the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812. These earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to flow backward temporarily, which led to the formation of the lake. Reelfoot Lake straddles both southeastern Missouri and western Tennessee borders and is a popular location for fishing, boating, and observing wildlife such as bald eagles.
