Polk County, located in the great state of Missouri, was established on March 13, 1835, and named in honor of James K. Polk, who was the Speaker of the House of Representatives at the time and later became the 11th President of the United States. The county seat is Bolivar, which was named after the South American revolutionary leader, Simn Bolivar.

Initially inhabited by Native American tribes, the region's first European settlers were predominantly of English, Irish, and German descent. The early economy of Polk County relied heavily on agriculture and livestock farming, with corn, wheat, and oats being the primary crops. In the mid-to-late-19th century, Polk County saw significant growth due to the arrival of new settlers from Tennessee, Kentucky, and other southern states.

A key historical event in Polk County was the Battle of Humansville during the American Civil War. The battle took place on March 26, 1862, and involved Union troops under the command of Colonel James M. Glover clashing with Confederate forces led by General John A. Poindexter. The Union forces emerged victorious in this skirmish, further strengthening their hold on Missouri.

A fun fact about Polk County is that it is home to the picturesque small town of Walnut Grove, which is named after the grove of black walnut trees located northwest of the town. Walnut Grove was incorporated in 1871 and is known for its annual Walnut Grove Harvest Days festival, a celebration of the area's rich agricultural history that attracts visitors from across the region. The festival features a variety of events, including tractor shows, crafts, entertainment, and delicious food highlighting the local flavors of Polk County.
