Ray County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Missouri. It was established on November 16, 1820, and named in honor of John Ray, a Missouri state legislator and early settler in the region. Covering an area of 570 square miles, it has its county seat in the city of Richmond.

Ray County was originally part of the vast Louisiana Territory, which was acquired by the United States under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Settlement in the area began in the early 19th century, mainly by pioneers of European descent.

One notable event in Ray County's history is the infamous 1838 Mormon War, during which clashes arose between the settlers and the Mormon community led by Joseph Smith. Known as the Missouri Mormon War, tensions in the region escalated until Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs issued an "Extermination Order" that forced the Mormons to abandon their settlements and leave the state.

The county has a rich agricultural history, which remains one of the primary economic drivers to this day. Farming and livestock are vital aspects of the rural landscape in Ray County, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Fun Fact: Ray County is home to the Watkins Woolen Mill, which is now a state park and historic site. This well-preserved, mid-19th-century textile mill is considered one of the best examples of early industrial architecture in the United States. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's history during the Industrial Revolution.
