Ripley County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on January 5, 1833. It was named in honor of General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, an esteemed war hero from the War of 1812. The county seat, Doniphan, was named after Colonel Alexander William Doniphan, a prominent local figure and lawyer.

The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage and the Shawnee before European settlers arrived in the early 1800s. The first white settlers were primarily of English, Irish, and German descent. They engaged in agricultural activities like farming and raising livestock, which later became the mainstay of the economy.
