Saint Francois County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on December 19, 1821. It was named after the St. Francis River, which was in turn named by French settlers in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. The area was settled predominantly by French and later German immigrants, drawn by the rich mineral deposits and fertile land.

The county is known for its rich history, dating back to the prehistoric era. The first lead mining operations in the region can be traced back to 1720, when French miners started exporting lead to France. The lead mining industry in Saint Francois County played a significant role in the development of the United States, providing raw materials for ammunition during various wars, including the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

The county seat, Farmington, was founded in 1822 and experienced significant growth during the early and mid-19th century, thanks to agriculture and the booming mining industry. As the county developed, schools, churches, and businesses were established to cater to the growing population, which led to the development of other towns in the region.

One fun fact about Saint Francois County is that numerous sinkholes can be found throughout the county. These sinkholes are a result of the unique karst topography, which is characterized by soluble rocks like limestone and dolomite, making it susceptible to the formation of caves and sinkholes. As a result, the region boasts several fascinating caves that are quite popular among spelunkers and tourists alike.
