Shelby County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on January 2, 1835. The county is named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. The county seat is located in the city of Shelbyville.

The region was initially settled in the early 19th century, largely by pioneers of European descent who were attracted by the fertile farmland and abundant resources. The county's development was significantly influenced by agricultural activities, particularly as it relates to livestock farming and the production of corn and wheat.
