.Ste. Genevieve County, located in the great state of Missouri, holds great historical significance as one of the oldest European settlements west of the Mississippi River. The area was first settled in the early 1700s by French-Canadian settlers, who were drawn to the region due to its fertile land and abundant natural resources. The village of Ste. Genevieve was officially established in 1735.
The location flourished as a part of the French Illinois Country before being handed over to the Spanish in 1762, following The Treaty of Fontainebleau. The settlement remained under Spanish control until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which transferred the region to the United States. Ste. Genevieve County was formally organized on October 1, 1812.
Due to its rich history, Ste. Genevieve County is known for its beautiful French colonial architecture. Many structures from the 18th and 19th centuries still stand today, offering a window into the past. The county is home to the Bolduc House Museum, which is recognized as the oldest authentically restored building in the United States.
Fun fact: Ste. Genevieve County is home to the largest concentration of "French vertical log" buildings on Earth.
