Vernon County, located in the great state of Missouri, was established on February 27, 1855. It is named in honor of Colonel Miles Vernon, a Missouri state senator and veteran of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. The county seat is Nevada, which was founded in 1855 and named after the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California.

Before the establishment of Vernon County, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and Missouria. European exploration began in the 17th century, with French explorers traversing the region. In the early 19th century, American settlers began to move into the area, and it was during this time that the fertile soil of the region became the focus of agricultural development, primarily in crop farming and livestock raising.

Throughout its history, Vernon County faced numerous challenges, such as the impact of the American Civil War. During the war, the county saw several skirmishes and raids, with the most notable being the Burning of Nevada. In this incident, Confederate guerrillas led by Sterling Price burned the town of Nevada to the ground in retaliation for the Union Army's burning of Osceola, Missouri.

Vernon County continued to grow and develop through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of railroads and the establishment of various businesses and cultural institutions.

Fun fact: In 1941, President Harry S. Truman, a native Missourian, delivered a dedication speech for the opening of the Bushwhacker Museum in Vernon County. The museum is named in reference to the pro-Confederate guerrillas known as "bushwhackers" who were active in the region during the Civil War. The Bushwhacker Museum showcases the history of Vernon County, with a special emphasis on the Civil War era.
