Big Horn County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Montana, was established on January 13, 1913, when it was carved out of portions of Rosebud and Yellowstone Counties. The county is named after the famous Big Horn River that runs through its territory, which in turn was named for the large numbers of bighorn sheep in the surrounding areas.

The region has a fascinating historical background dating back thousands of years, with the Crow Nation calling this land home. Early European settlers began exploring the region in the early 19th century, including the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, which passed through the area in 1805.

Big Horn County has experienced various economic changes throughout its history. Agriculture, livestock and mining were the focal points of its economy for many years, with sugar beet farming and cattle ranching leaving a significant legacy.

The region is rich in cultural heritage, featuring several historic sites like the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, where the infamous battle between Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry and a coalition of Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho, took place in 1876. The Custer Battlefield Museum, located in Garryowen, Montana, preserves and interprets artifacts and exhibits related to this historical event.

A fun fact about Big Horn County is that it forms part of the Crow Indian Reservation, which is the largest Native American reservation in the state of Montana, comprising about 3,565 square miles. The county melds a variety of historical and cultural influences, showcasing its unique character within the "Last Best Place," as Montana is often called.
