Custer County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Montana, was established in 1877, taking its name in honor of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The county was formed from parts of Yellowstone, Big Horn, and Dawson counties. Miles City, the county seat, was founded in 1876 as a hub for shipping cattle along the Yellowstone River by General Nelson A. Miles.

Custer County covers an area of approximately 3,793 square miles and features a diverse landscape, including rolling hills, valleys, and part of the Yellowstone River. Its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, livestock, and natural resource extraction.

An interesting and fun fact about Custer County is that it hosts the annual World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, which has taken place yearly since 1951. The event is held every third weekend in May and draws thousands of rodeo enthusiasts from across the country, celebrating the region's Western culture and rodeo traditions. The Bucking Horse Sale is one of the largest events of its kind in the United States, and it has become an essential part of the local economy and social scene.
