Fergus County is located in the central part of the great state of Montana, which is in the western United States. It was officially established on March 12, 1886, and was named in honor of James Fergus, an early Montana pioneer who was heavily involved in politics, farming, and mining. The county was originally part of the Montana Territory and was later absorbed into the state when Montana became the 41st state of the Union on November 8, 1889.

Lewistown, the county seat, lies at the heart of Fergus County, and it became the county seat in 1899. The region is primarily rural, with agriculture and ranching being its main economic activities. Fergus County was once home to thousands of homesteaders who settled in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its fertile land, abundant water resources, and relatively mild climate.

Fergus County has several significant geographical and historical sites. For example, the county is home to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument, which preserves the rugged landscapes and geological formations that characterize the Upper Missouri River region.

One fun fact about Fergus County is that it used to be the largest county in Montana before it was divided into smaller counties in 1919. Today, it is the fourth largest county in the state, covering an area of 4,350 square miles.
