.Flathead County, the great jewel of Montana, was established on February 6, 1893. Located in the northwestern part of the state, it encompasses nearly 5,256 square miles of diverse terrain, ranging from the majestic Rocky Mountains to lush valleys and pristine lakes. The county is named after the Flathead Native American tribe, who were among the first inhabitants of this region.
The area was explored in the early 19th century by European trappers and traders, such as David Thompson, who fostered relationships with the local tribes. Later in the century, the U.S. Army established Fort Owen trading post near present-day Missoula. As white settlement expanded, the Flathead tribe entered into several treaties with the United States, culminating in the creation of the Flathead Indian Reservation in 1855.
