Hill County, located in the great state of Montana, was created on February 22, 1912, from portions of Chouteau and Cascade Counties. It was named in honor of James J. Hill, a prominent railroad tycoon who was instrumental in the development of the Great Northern Railway.

The county seat, Havre, was established in 1893 as a major railway hub on the Great Northern Railway. Havre has grown with time and is now the largest community in Hill County, serving as the commercial center for the area.

Hill County is situated in the north-central part of Montana and is bordered by Blaine, Chouteau, and Liberty Counties, as well as the Canadian province of Alberta. The county's terrain is characterized by rolling plains, with the famous Bear's Paw Mountains and the Missouri River traversing the region.

In terms of cultural attractions, the county is home to the Fort Assinniboine Historic Site, which was once the largest military base in Montana during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was established in 1879 to protect the settlers and railroad crews from potential threats posed by Native American tribes in the area.

A fun fact about Hill County is the presence of the Wahkpa Chu'gn Archaeological Site, located behind the Holiday Village Mall in Havre. This site, discovered in 1962, has revealed evidence of nearly 2,000 years of Native American habitation. It is considered one of the most significant and well-preserved bison kill sites in North America, offering a unique glimpse into the region's prehistoric past.
