Lake County, Montana
.Lake County is located in the great state of Montana, named after the numerous large lakes found within its boundaries, the most significant one being the Flathead Lake. Established on May 11, 1923, Lake County was created from portions of Flathead and Missoula counties. Covering an area of approximately 1,654 square miles, Lake County is situated in the northwestern part of Montana.
The area has a rich Native American history, particularly of the Salish and Kootenai tribes who have inhabited the region for thousands of years. The Flathead Indian Reservation, created in 1855 by the Hellgate Treaty, is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and occupies a significant portion of the county.
One of the earliest European explorers in the region was David Thompson, a British-Canadian cartographer and fur trader, who navigated the area in the early 19th century. The influx of settlers heightened in the late 1800s and early 1900s, primarily due to the extension of the Great Northern Railway and the promotion of the Homestead Act.
Lake County has seen growth in agricultural production, timber harvesting, and tourism over the years. Many tourists today visit the National Bison Range, established in the county in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. This wildlife refuge is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species, including a substantial bison population.
A fun fact about Lake County is that Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States, is situated in this region. The lake stretches over 191 square miles, making it a popular destination for fishing, boating, and various recreational activities.
