Meagher County, located in the heart of Montana, was established in 1867, making it one of the oldest counties in the state. Its origins date back to the early territorial days of Montana when it was part of a larger region called Chouteau County. Meagher County was named in honor of General Thomas Francis Meagher, an Irish nationalist and prominent leader during the American Civil War who also became Montana's territorial Secretary.

The county is known for its abundant natural resources and spectacular landscapes, encompassing a total land area of 2,395 square miles. The terrain is made up of mountain ranges, vast valleys, rivers, and forests, providing a breathtaking backdrop for residents and visitors alike.

The county seat is White Sulphur Springs, a quaint town with a rich history that dates back to the discovery of sulfur-laden hot springs in 1872. These springs became a popular destination and contributed to the town's growth as a health resort in the late 19th century.

White Sulphur Springs also offers visitors the chance to step back in time, thanks to its well-preserved buildings and historic walking tour. The Castle Museum (originally named "the Castle" due to its architectural style) is an iconic landmark that was built in 1892 by the famous entrepreneur and cattle baron, Byron Roger Sherman. It is now a historical museum housing a vast array of artifacts and memorabilia.

One fun fact about Meagher County is that it is home to the annual Red Ants Pants Music Festival, which takes place in a cow pasture just outside White Sulphur Springs. The festival, founded in 2011, is dedicated to showcasing the best in Americana music and serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit Red Ants Pants Foundation. The foundation supports women's leadership, working family farms and ranches, and rural communities throughout Montana.
