Phillips County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Montana. It was established on February 5, 1915, and was named in honor of Benjamin D. Phillips, a prominent rancher, and businessman in the area who was originally from Ohio. The county was formed by dividing Blaine and Valley Counties. The county seat is located in Malta, which is also the largest city in the county.

Phillips County is rich in history and cultural heritage. It was once the home to tribal nations such as the Assiniboine, Sioux, and Gros Ventre people, who left their mark on the land through various artifacts and rock formations. The Milk River, which flows through Phillips County, has been a critical location for these tribes for centuries, providing water, bison, and other resources.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area was settled by European immigrants, particularly homesteaders who were drawn by the promise of cheap land and opportunity. Many of these settlers were from Scandinavia, Germany, and other European countries, bringing with them their customs, traditions, and agricultural expertise.

An interesting fun fact about Phillips County is that it is home to the "Dinosaur Trail," which is a series of paleontological and geological sites spread out over 300 miles in northern Montana. Phillips County boasts numerous fossil discoveries, some of which date back as far as 75 million years. The American Museum of Natural History holds many fossils that were excavated in Phillips County, including skeletons of dinosaurs such as Gorgosaurus, Prosaurolophus, and Edmontosaurus, among others. The region continues to be a treasure trove for paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts alike.
