Powell County is located in the state of Montana, USA, and encompasses an area of approximately 2,329 square miles. Established on January 31, 1901, the county was named in honor of Mount Powell, which itself was named after famed explorer John Wesley Powell. The city of Deer Lodge serves as both the county seat and the largest city in Powell County.

The area that now makes up Powell County was once inhabited by Indigenous peoples, such as the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai tribes. European-American settlers first arrived in the early 19th century, attracted by the rich fur trade in the region. The discovery of gold in the 1860s further encouraged settlement in the area.

One of the main historical events in the county revolves around the Deer Lodge Valley, which was traversed by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. The valley saw the establishment of the first European-American settlement in 1858 when Johnny Grant, a Canadian fur trapper, settled in the region. This settlement later became the focal point of the Deer Lodge community.

In the late 19th century, the Mullan Road, a wagon road connected Fort Benton, Montana, with Walla Walla, Washington, further contributing to Deer Lodge's growth. Additionally, the opening of the Montana State Prison in 1871 added to the county's development. The prison operated until 1979 when its operations were transferred to a new facility.

Powell County's rich history extends into its natural resources as well. Among its picturesque landscapes, the county is home to the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site. This site commemorates the Western cattle industry from 1850 to 1900 and remains a working ranch today.

A fun fact about Powell County is that it boasts numerous outdoor activities thanks to its plentiful forestlands, mountains, lakes, and rivers. Popular activities include hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling, which attract both locals and visitors to the region, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
