Ravalli County, located in the great state of Montana, has a rich historical background that dates back to the early 19th century. It was established on March 3rd, 1893, and was named after the Jesuit priest, Father Anthony Ravalli. The county is situated in the southwestern part of Montana and encompasses the Bitterroot Valley, which has played a significant role in both Native American and European American history.

The region was originally inhabited by the Salish Native American tribe, who had been living there for thousands of years. In the early 1800s, the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through the area, bringing the Bitterroot Valley to the attention of European Americans. Jesuit missionaries, such as the aforementioned Father Anthony Ravalli, also settled in the region, establishing St. Mary's Mission, the first Catholic mission in what would become Montana. This mission, which was founded in 1841, still stands today as a museum and historical site.

The discovery of gold in the late 19th century led to an influx of settlers, and the development of the towns of Hamilton, Stevensville, and Darby, among others. As the population grew, the agricultural industry flourished and the timber industry prospered due to the vast forests in the surrounding Bitterroot Mountains.

Today, Ravalli County is a picturesque destination with a vibrant community, boasting various recreational opportunities and natural attractions, such as the Bitterroot National Forest, which spans over 1.6 million acres.

Fun Fact: Ravalli County is part of the Sapphire Range, which is known for the numerous sapphires found within its borders. The area's gemstone deposits attract mineral enthusiasts from around the world, making it a sought-after destination for rockhounds seeking these precious stones.
