Sanders County is located in the northwest region of the great state of Montana. It was established on February 7, 1905, and named in honor of Wilbur Fiske Sanders, a U.S. senator from Montana and key figure in the early history of the state. He was a skilled lawyer and a driving force behind the capture of the infamous outlaw Henry Plummer.

The county covers an area of approximately 2,790 square miles, with the county seat residing in the town of Thompson Falls. Originally, the land was home to the Salish and Kootenai Native American tribes before European settlement. In the mid to late 1800s, the area experienced an influx of miners, prospectors, and loggers, attracted by the rich natural resources such as gold, silver, and timber.

Historic points of interest in the county include the Old Jail Museum in Thompson Falls and the Trout Creek Motel, which dates back to the early 1900s. The region is well-known for its spectacular natural surroundings, featuring vast forests, rivers, and spectacular mountains. This makes it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, who can partake in a range of activities such as fishing, hiking, and hunting.

One fun fact about Sanders County is that it hosts the annual Huckleberry Festival in Trout Creek, Montana. This event celebrates the wild huckleberry, a small, purple berry native to the region that's highly prized for its delicious taste and often used in jams, pies, and other desserts. The festival features a huckleberry dessert contest, live music, and a parade, attracting visitors from all over the region to enjoy this unique celebration.
