Stillwater County is a county located in the state of Montana, United States. Established in 1913, it was formed from parts of Carbon, Yellowstone, and Sweet Grass Counties. The county seat is found in Columbus, which is also its largest town.

Stillwater County has a rich history dating back to Native American cultures, most notably the Crow tribe. Throughout the 19th century, fur traders and explorers like William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition ventured into the area. The mid-to-late 1800s saw an influx of settlers due to the Montana Gold Rush that led to the establishment of mining towns, some of which are now ghost towns. Additionally, the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway in the region significantly boosted economic development.

The county is nestled along the Beartooth Mountains and offers spectacular views, outdoor recreational activities, and a diverse range of wildlife. A fun fact about Stillwater County is that it is home to the Stillwater Mine, one of the largest and longest-operating palladium and platinum mines in North America. This mine produces around 400,000 ounces of the metals combined each year and has been in operation since 1986.
