Alexander County is located in the Western Piedmont region of North Carolina, a southeastern U.S. state. The county was established on March 15, 1847, and was named in honor of William Julius Alexander, a North Carolina Speaker of the House from 1846 to 1847. Its county seat, Taylorsville, is named after General Zachary Taylor, who became the 12th President of the United States.

Alexander County was formed from portions of three adjacent counties: Iredell, Caldwell, and Wilkes. Primarily agricultural in nature during its early years, Alexander County's economy gradually diversified with the growth of manufacturing, furniture-making, and textile industries in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The rolling countryside of Alexander County is home to numerous natural and recreational attractions, including the Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area and Lake Hickory, which is ideal for boating, fishing, and picnicking. A significant portion of the county sits within the Brushy Mountains, a lower and more rounded range compared to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fun Fact: One interesting aspect of Alexander County is the geological formation called the "Hiddenite" gemstone, a rare green variety of spodumene. This gemstone was first discovered in the county in the late 19th century, and the town of Hiddenite is named after this unique mineral. Alexander County is the only place in the world where this gemstone can be found in significant quantities, making the region unique both geologically and culturally.
