Ashe County is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina and was officially established in 1799, formed out of parts of Wilkes County. Covering an area of about 427 square miles, it is named in honor of Samuel Ashe, a Revolutionary War patriot, governor of North Carolina from 1795 to 1798, and Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ashe County was predominantly a rural region focused on agriculture, primarily centered on the production of timber, tobacco, and Christmas trees. It is home to the New River, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world with an estimated age of 320-340 million years. Today, the region has a population of around 27,000 residents.

A fun fact about Ashe County is that it is known as the "Land of the Lost Province" due to its geographical remoteness and previous inaccessibility by early transportation. However, this isolation allowed the county's rich cultural heritage to be well preserved in its traditional music, arts, and crafts.
