Cabarrus County, located in the southern piedmont region of North Carolina, was established on December 29, 1792. It was named in honor of Stephen Cabarrus, a prominent North Carolinian who served as the Speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons.

The area was originally inhabited by the Catawba and Sugaree Native American tribes. European settlement in the region began in the mid-1700s as Scotch-Irish, Pennsylvania Dutch, and English immigrants moved into the area. The city of Concord, founded in 1796, is the county seat of Cabarrus County.

The county has a rich history in gold mining, as it was home to the first documented gold discovery in the United States. In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek, sparking the North Carolina gold rush. This was decades before the more famous California gold rush.

A key historical figure from the area is Stonewall Jackson, the Confederate general who was born in the portion of Cabarrus County that later became part of neighboring Union County.

Cabarrus County experienced rapid industrialization during the early 20th century, primarily in textile manufacturing. More recently, the county has emerged as a hub for motorsports, with several NASCAR teams and the Charlotte Motor Speedway located within its boundaries.

A fun fact about Cabarrus County is that it houses the only remaining covered bridge in North Carolina - the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge. The bridge, built in 1895, spans Lyle's Creek and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
