Camden County, located in the northeastern region of North Carolina, was established in 1777. It was formed from the northeastern part of Pasquotank County and named after Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, a defender of American rights in British Parliament. The county seat is Camden, which is also its largest city.

Early inhabitants of the region included the Yeopim and Pasquotank Native American tribes. European settlement began in the late 17th century with the arrival of English colonists, followed by the establishment of a flourishing timber industry. Farming also served as a significant part of the county's early economy, with landowners producing corn, wheat, and tobacco. Camden County played a role in the Revolutionary War when Culpeper's Rebellion, a 1677 uprising against the autocratic rule of Governor Thomas Miller, took place in the area.

In the 19th century, the Dismal Swamp Canal was constructed in the county, providing a direct water route from the Albemarle Sound to Chesapeake Bay. This, combined with the addition of the Pasquotank River, increased commerce across the region.

A fun fact about Camden County is that it is home to the Dismal Swamp State Park, encompassing a unique ecosystem and featuring the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The park preserves a large portion of the Great Dismal Swamp, a vast wetland that once spanned more than one million acres from southeastern Virginia to northeastern North Carolina. Today, the refuge offers recreational opportunities such as hiking, bird-watching, and boating.
